When a dog's teeth are no longer intact, serious subsequent problems can occur. The ingested food cannot be chewed properly, so the body cannot absorb enough nutrients. In addition, chunks of food that are too large can lead to gastrointestinal problems. In the worst case, undetected dental problems can lead to dental failure or dangerous infections.
Therefore, watch for visual signs of unhealthy teeth, e.g. B. discoloration of the gums, bleeding gums, unnatural saliva production or yellowish or brownish deposits on the teeth. A bad breath odor or an altered eating behavior or loss of appetite can also be caused by dental problems.
Many dogs suffer from tartar, gingivitis, or periodontitis (gum disease). The basis of these three most common dental diseases is plaque. Deposits form on the teeth from a combination of saliva, food particles and bacteria present in the mouth.
Plaque is particularly good at forming and settling on the gums, on rough tooth surfaces or in narrow spaces between teeth.
